Description:
Abstract:
This shapefile is part of the IGAD Minimum Medical GIS Database. To deterimine if methods used for development of the GIS environmental risk model for Ethiopia could be applied to other regions in East Africa, the 'dry season model' was extrapolated to the entire IGAD region and compared with digital schistosomiasis distribution and prevalence data from an independent data set, the WHO atlas on the global distribution of schistosomiasis. Note zones in the southern Sudan and coastal Somalia that were incorrectly predicted to be suitable, irrigated areas correctly predicted to be suitable, and sites in Uganda (where B. Sudanica is the major vector species) that were predicted to be unsuitable. The query (red area) shows NDVI values between 125-140 and Tmax values between 22-37.
Purpose:
To be used as part of the IGAD Minimum Medical GIS Database. The extrapolation of the GIS 'dry season model' query to neighboring countries in the IGAD zone of East Africa provides an idea of where environments may be suitable for S. mansoni.

Process_Description:
To develop optimum criteria ranges for the dry season, values for 5 km buffers around survey sites were extracted from the combined 2-year dry season composite map by iteratively fitting query overlay areas to the spatial distribution of sites with >=5% prevalence. Query best-fit results were 125-140 NDVI and 22-37 Tmax. This result represents the dry season model. The resulting dry season model had a positive predictive value of 97.0%.
